COFFEE

I'm a regular coffee drinker, and when I say "regular" what I mean is daily. Recently when ordering coffee at a coffee shop and they ask me, "Which one would you like?" I tend to reply "The one that is the hottest." In other words, I'm not here for tasty coffee that is about to be room temperature, I'm here for coffee that is going to keep steaming for at least 30 minutes after I've ordered it. When coffee hits room temperature I either have to get a top-off to increase the temperature or I just throw it out.

MATTHEW 5:13B

Jesus is making a similar aside in Matthew 5:13 when he is talking about his disciples being the salt of the earth. In the second half of the verse he says, "But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?"

Jesus gives his disciples a warning that just because they are currently the salt of the earth doesn't mean they will stay the salt of the earth. They are in danger of losing their saltiness, as a result - they have to stay salty.

RESALT

This Epiphany season, we're reminded that we are invited to be the salt of the earth, but we are always a season away from losing our saltiness. It's the disciplines like prayer and worship that can help keep us salty, but if we go too long without prayer, worship, scripture reading, margin, etc. - we begin living out of our own strength and striving. It's in these seasons of self-strength and self-striving that we begin to lose our saltiness, develop a bitter taste from, and become less enjoyable to be around.

You are the salt of the earth. Remain the salt of the earth. It will go well for you.
