CHICK-FIL-A

Chick-fil-a is one of the great American, fast-food companies.

One of the things that makes them great is that they are meticulous in their hiring process.

They hire the best of the best so that they can keep their standards and culture high.

There are a few legendary tales of Truett Kathy as the founder and CEO of Chick-fil-a until his passing.

One particular tale goes that he heard that a Chick-fil-a somehwere was charging their customers for cups of water (a big no-no in Chick-fil-a world).

This was such a big deal to Truett that he flew to the city, traveled to the store in-person, gave the manager a small sum of money and said something to the effect of, "This should cover the cups of water for the next year. Don't charge for water anymore."

When Truett shows up, he's showing up to re-establish order in his stores.

Something similar is happening in Matthew 21.

MATTHEW 21:5

It's Palm Sunday, and Jesus is riding into Jerusalem onto a donkey.

The text says he's doing this to fulfill a prophecy in Zechariah:

"See your king comes to you."

This wasn't an uncommon thing.

Within the kingdom if everything was a peace, the king had no need to go anywhere (except for maybe leasure).

If there was a slight amount of turmoil, the king would send a representative or summon the parties and judge/rule.

If there was a great amount of turmoil, the king would go himself.

When the king went himself, it's because he meant business.

RE-ESTABLISHING ORDER IN OUR LIVES

The big idea here is that Israel was in a great season of turmoil.

There are fighting religious factions.

They are Roman-occupied.

They have Zealots that are causing violent conflict with Rome and stirring up revolts.

Things are not looking good for Israel, and so while God has historically sent representatives  to Israel (priests, prophets, and kings), He now arrives Himself incarnate as Jesus the Son to re-establish order.

This is really good news for us, because we have lots of areas that need the re-establishment of order and God's rule. We God to afresh establish his rule and reign:

  • In our marriages
  • In our homes
  • In our finances
  • In our bodies
  • Etc.

So know that whatever area is out of order and outside the reign of God in your life, Jesus comes to you this Holy Week to be king and to re-establish his rule and his reign.

This is good news.
