MARTY McFLY
Back to the Future Movies are some of my favorite, unremembered movies.
I never think to rewatch them, but when I see them on, I can't stop watching.
Some of the moments I always appreciate it when Marty goes back-and-forth between years and is completely dressed incorrectly.
He either looks like he's from the past or he looks like he's from the future and it always creates this moment of shock from the people that see him.
Looking like you are from another place can be an eye-popping, people-watching experience.
Something similar is happening in 2 Corinthians 1:21b-22.
1 CORINTHIANS 1:21B-22
Paul is writing to a church in Corinth about being anointed, filled, and sealed with the Holy Spirit.
He's at the pinnacle of his argument and says this:
"21B He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."
I love that last line "put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."
For Paul the ages were colliding - the present, evil age, and the future, good age of the kingdom.
The future was breaking into the present, and the Holy Spirit was acting as a deposit in the lives of believers to make their present life look like their future life.
EYE-POPPING, PEOPLE-WATCHING
This is incredible news for us.
While the present days are evil, the future days are filled with glory of God, and the Holy Spirit makes it so that we look like the latter in the former.
In other words, because of the Holy Spirit we ought to be eye-popping, people-watching to other people.
In a sliced-up verse from 1 Corinthians:
"9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display...We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. ...12 We work hard with our own hands...we bless...we endure; 13 ...we answer kindly."
In other words, when the Holy Spirit fills us, we live and act in such a way that feels strange and foreign to the current age, but is infused with the presence and glory of God from the future age.
The Holy Spirit makes us a people back from the future.
